MMA Information
MMA, or Mixed Martial Arts, is a combat sport in which a wide variety of fighting techniques are used, including both striking and grappling. These techniques include, but are not limited to: American kickboxing, boxing, muay thai, karate, all different styles of wrestling, judo, jiu-jitsu, sambo, and catch wrestling.
Our MMA program was introduced in January of 2007 as a result of a joint effort between Avatar owner Ian Kralt and submission grappling coach Jamie Wootton. With Ian's excellent striking skills, and Jamie's extensive submission grappling and MMA coaching, we have created a well-rounded, effective MMA system.
Even though our MMA is still in its infancy, the program is quickly growing. We now have a half-cage in the club, along with MMA classes 5 days per week. We are already seeing the birth of some awesome and passionate fighters and will eventually update the news page with results and bio's as we get them out there fighting.
The system of submission grappling Jamie coaches is based on brazilian jiu-jitsu, japanese, jiu-jitsu, shoot wresting, judo, Greco-Roman wrestling, and freestyle wresting. The program is taught to cover all aspects of MMA fighting from ground, to stand-up and all the transitions in between.
Ian adds his perspective of the stand-up game with his past experience as a kickboxer and experienced coach. |
